STATEMENT
My application to MSA deeply
roots from my desire to study architecture at one of the most renowned and
internationally recognised architecture school in the world. Manchester School
of Architecture is well reputed and as it is also known for the finest quality
of teaching (staff who have first hand experience in the field of
architecture), therefore I think studying here will be highly challenging and
exciting at the same time. As MSA is consistently ranked in the top ten
architecture schools in the United Kingdom and located in a city highly rich in
architecture, studying at MSA will certainly challenge my skills required to
complete this course. The course offered at MSA is very challenging but it equips students with the knowledge
of the technical as well as creative aspects of the industry. I think with the
help of the highly educated and experienced staff at MSA, I will be able to
bring out the best in me. MSA is located in Manchester,
which is an excellent city to study architecture, as it is a showcase of
industrial heritage, historic as well as modern buildings.
I recently visited one
of the Seven Wonders of the World -The Taj Mahal in my Christmas break. The Taj Mahal is considered to be
the best example of Mughal architecture. It is a perfect blend combining
elements from Islamic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish as well as Indian architectural
styles. The minute details of the structure such as the detailing (flowers) on
the marble, delicate pierce work, calligraphy on the walls and the detail of
the Pietra dura jali add to the beauty of the structure. I was highly inspired by its spectacular architecture and aesthetic beauty.
My favourite architect
is Zaha Hadid. She is an Iraqi-British architect. She received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004(the first women
to do so) and the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011. Her buildings’ are
characteristically neofuturistic. She is an architect who consistently pushes
the boundaries of architecture and urban design. Her projects are a perfect
blend of ingenuity, creativity and excellence. My favourite building of Zaha
Hadid is: The Guangzhou Opera House, China. It is shaped to
resemble two pebbles.
The Sagrada Familia, Barcelona,
Spain is the architectural work I would love to visit in person. Antonio Gaudi,
famous Spanish architect worked on this masterpiece of his until death. It is
not yet completed but I believe it is one of the most precious work of
architecture. I have seen videos of this church and I could see how much effort
is being put into the minute details of every single portion of the church.
It’s the beauty in Gaudi’s design of the church that holds my attention.
- LONDON SKYLINE.
This is a free hand sketch of the London skyline. I have sketched the main buildings/structures in London : The London Bridge, The Gherkin, St Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben, The Parliament and The London Eye. I have also shown their reflections in the water.
- CITYSCAPE.
This drawing is in perspective. I have used watercolours and colour pencils for this drawing. I thought of using two different media because I wanted this drawing to look a bit different from the regular cityscape drawings.
- BEDROOM.
This room represents my cousin's bedroom. This drawing is in one-point perspective. It was my first perspective drawing.
- SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE.
This is my favourite building and I would like to visit it one day. This structure has a modern expressionist design. I get inspired to design something of that sort every time I look at it. That is why I decided to include a painting of this beautiful structure in my portfolio. I have used watercolours to complete this painting.
- SKETCHES.
Pencil Sketch.
This sketch is of a woman who is scared. The fear is reflected in her eyes. I was inspired to sketch this one from a newspaper article.
Pencil Sketch.
This was my first sketch. I think this sketch reflects the beauty of this young girl (even though I have sketched only her backside without clothes).
- PAINTINGS.
NATURE.
I have used Poster colours for this painting.
A painting I had done in college for an art competition.
ABSTRACT PAINTING.
I have used oil paints for this painting.
I love to draw abstract designs and as blue is my favourite colour I have used it’s different shades to complete this painting.
- PORTRAITS.
ZAHA HADID
She is my favourite architect.
She is the best woman architect in the world. All her projects are typically brilliant. My recent favourite is the Guangzhou Opera House, China. She is my inspiration.
DAVID BECKHAM
He is my favourite footballer.
A philanthropist, ex-footballer, a good human being, supportive husband and a great father of 4 kids, I think he is the perfect example of what a man should be like.
- PHOTOGRAPHY.
I clicked this picture using my phone last year in India during the
DIWALI (festival of lights) festival. On the first day of this festival over
200 people gathered early in the morning (around 5am) on a huge sports ground
in my city and released these beautiful sky lanterns. It was the most beautiful
scene ever.
The view was beautiful, the sounds and water serene. I took this picture when I was walking in Peak District near Sheffield last weekend. The small and shallow rock walled bridge that slopes steeply on both sides adds to the beauty of this picture.
